The Louie the Lobster series is developing out of what I saw as a an opportunity to help independent readers take a strong hold of reading in a fun and easy way. In addition to my belief that imagery plays a significant and longer term role in helping children read, the use of imagery also allow us to 'talk' to children about tougher subjects that they deal with on a daily basis in their young lives.
The first book in the Louie the Lobster series ("What is a Friend?") talks about the true meaning of friendship. Other planned books in the series will tackle tougher but no less important subjects such as: Teasing, Bullying, Peer Pressure, Learning Difficulties and Discrimination.
As an 'Acadien' I am a strong advocate of having children encouraged to learn different languages and cultures as early as possible in their life. As a result, Louie the Lobster series will be created in both English and French (we are currently working on the French language version of 'What is a Friend?' and after that, other languages as they become requested). My ultimate goal is to create books that children will love to read and hopefully encourage them to make reading a big part of their lives for years to come.
I am always open to suggestions as to how to improve our books so if you have any ideas or comments please send me an email at Sarah@Louie or Sarah@CraftyCanuck.
I am big supporter of freely exchanging ideas to make things better and to provide people choice, especially when it comes to education, reading and learning (no two people learn the exact same way). To that end, both Crafty Canuck Inc. and the Louie the Lobster series are committed to bringing that sense of community and engagement as well as choice, to our books.
